NSSN Special – URGENT Sign trade unionists against benefit cuts & support the Mass Protest of Parliament 30th June (& national day of action 1st July)

Trade unionists from several unions have been successfully proposing motions against the welfare cuts bill that is being rushed through parliament. They have asked for a specific email to the NSSN mailing list, given the scale and depth of the cuts – We agree that it is an industrial, equality, community, and political issue that needs clear, urgent, and open cross-coordination. Pressure is building on Starmer’s government – keep it going!

Ben Golightly from Swansea DPAC will be speaking at the NSSN Annual Conference 2025 – Make the rich pay not workers!  - 11am-4.30pm Saturday 5th July in Conway Hall, 25 Red Lion Square, London WC1R 4RL. Attendance fee – £10  Facebook event. Open to all trade unionists and anti-cuts campaigners

NSSN members who are also actively part of Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC) are organising a powerful two-part national protest against the government’s proposed disability cuts outlined in the Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment Bill, which was introduced to Parliament on 18th June 2025 amid a sham consultation.

The Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment Bill will significantly impact disabled people, carers, and the frontline advice, health, and social care sectors across the UK, with the double whammy if you’re disabled in those sectors.

The Bill will push hundreds of thousands into deeper poverty. This will lead to an estimated 150,000 fewer carers receiving Carer’s Allowance or the carer element of Universal Credit by 2030. For frontline advice services, these changes will result in an overwhelming surge in demand from distressed individuals navigating a more complex and punitive benefits system, while often facing their funding cuts.

The government is pushing this legislation through with the second reading and vote on the Bill on Tuesday, 1st July 2025. This means the Bill is progressing even while the consultation period for the original Green Paper (which closes on 30th June 2025) is still open.

Ways to Take Action (locally or nationally):

Workplace Actions options

  • Share the letter and have a meeting. Discuss how these cuts could affect disabled workers, carers, and the wider community, local govt, social & health care, as well as advice and the alternatives.
  • Organise a lunchtime meeting
  • Contact your regional union office, elected officers, and Executive members to take a public stand and mobilise for the protests.
  • Support & Enable Others: Offer practical help to those who are campaigning locally, such as making signs, distributing flyers, editing, speaking if we can’t or helping with digital outreach. Ensure closed captions are on, agendas sent at least 48 hours in advance + seating reserved for lip readers etc.
  • If appropriate and safe to do so, organise a short, symbolic action with your members at your workplace, a group photo with protest signs, or wearing a ribbon of solidarity with linked hashtags to be shared (not on your work email/computer).. A lunchtime collective break.
  • Social Media Blitz: Use social media to highlight the actions. Use hashtags (e.g. #WelfareNotWarfare, #StopDisabilityCuts, #SaveOurBenefits check the trending ones and link appropriate messages. Tag your MP, local councillors, relevant union, and community groups.

Low priority – Take part or use this quiz, which is aimed at a little myth busting.

This is a critical time against these proposed cuts.  We can unite to resist this assault on our community and pose alternatives, including a wealth tax, nationalising energies, transport,  fair pay, capping rents, not benefits.

An injury to one is an injury to all (No pun intended).
