TUC Name the day for a General strike – Lobby 24th April

NSSN to lobby TUC General Council on Wednesday April 24th – from 8.30am outside TUC Congress House, Great Russell Street, London WC1B 3LS

The National Shop Stewards Network (NSSN) has called a lobby of the TUC General Council on April 24th. The NSSN has been campaigning for the maximum co-ordinated strike action to stop the cuts. The NSSN will be lobbying this meeting of the union leaders for them to name the date for a 24 hour general strike.

We organised a lobby of the TUC conference last September which brought up to a 1000 union activists to Brighton. We were delighted that the POA motion for the TUC to consider the ‘practicalities’ of a general strike was passed. As a result of the POA motion, the TUC General Council has been consulting with unions. This should lead to the TUC and the unions organising a joint strike that would seriously confront the ConDem cuts.

There are any number of issues that could be the basis for common action – pay, redundancies, pensions, terms & conditions. PCS is currently taking national strike action on these very items – starting on Budget Day  Wed March 20th. We call on all other public sector unions to urgently meet with the PCS to discuss co-ordinating ballots and action. There should then be a call out to all workers in the private sector to co-ordinate live disputes with any such action. This can be the route to strikes on a maximum scale. An ideal date could be June 26th – when Osborne sets out the next tranche of cuts for the year of the next general election.

Please share with your members, unions and wider community.
