NO TO CUTS, CLOSURES AND PRIVATISATION
IN ROYAL MAIL
For general strike
action to defend public services
2 June Postal workers in
London have voted by four to one (79%) in favour of strike action
against plans to shut three mail centres and one delivery office:
Mount Pleasant, Nine Elms, Rathbone Place and Twelve Trees. The
National Shop Stewards Network gives its full support to 3,500 Royal
Mail staff who are now preparing for strike action.
Martin Walsh, CWU
divisional rep, said: London postal workers have sent a clear message
to Royal Mail in this ballot that they will not be bullied or
intimidated by the company. Royal Mails closure plans are a clear
threat of compulsory redundancy and this is completely unacceptable.
Asset-stripping and
Privatisation New chief executive, Moya Greene, is hell-bent on asset
stripping in preparation for the Con-Dem governments plans to
privatise the post service.
These callous closures
will have a serious impact on jobs and service levels in London. Since
the early 1990s seven mail centres have closed. In 2009, Royal Mail
paid over 1 million in compensation to London businesses for a range
of quality failures. Mass compulsory redundancies, and attempts to
deskill and casualise the workforce should be resisted.
The government plans
to raid the funds 25 billion assets and transfer postal workers to
an even worse scheme than the one they were shunted onto two years
ago.
The NSSN would support
decisive national action by the CWU to fight all the attacks on postal
workers. This action should be linked to that of other trade unions.
CWU should support workers taking action on 30 June and should march
with them on the London demonstration on that day.
Postal workers are
also affected by all the savage cuts in public spending announced by
the government and councils across the country. Widespread,
coordinated industrial action backed up by movements of local
communities and service users is whats needed to stop the cuts.
CWU conference calls
for 24-hour general strike against cuts The CWU conference has voted
unanimously to call on the TUC to coordinate a 24-hour general strike
against the cuts and attacks on wages and pensions.
The union also
resolved to work with other trade unions and campaigning organisations
to stop the cuts in local areas, including through coordinating
campaigns and strike action.
To discuss and debate
the militant coordinated action necessary to fight cuts and
privatisation, and to link up with trade unionists from across unions
and across the country, come to the NSSN conference on June 11th.
