Strike Together in November!
6 September
The Trade Union Congress is OUR organisation. Its 6 million workers
keep the wheels of life turning. Potentially a powerful organised
force, it could defeat the ConDems and challenge their right to rule
in the interests of their greedy big business friends.
In March the TUC's
national demonstration brought three quarters of a million onto the
streets of London in anger at cuts to jobs, pensions and wages. But
now we all need to keep up pressure on trade union leaders to take the
fight forward.
Teachers and civil
servants in PCS, NUT, UCU and ATL lit the flame of protest with a
one-day strike in June to stop the pensions' robbery. They are now
preparing for further action in November. The massive public sector
unions, like Unison, Unite and GMB, must join them.
The NSSN appeals to
the TUC General Council and delegates to Congress 2011 to call on all
union leaders to make November a strike of 3-4 million. We must warn
the Con/Dems that we will not meekly accept our livelihoods being
eroded year on year until nothing is left. We
therefore call on TUC delegates to support motions 15, 29, 30, 45, 46
and 47.
In August youth anger
overflowed, sometimes hurting their own communities. Banks had
received billions from the public purse, MPs had fraudulently pocketed
taxpayers' money, the media and police had flouted the law with
impunity, but all were treated with exceptional leniency or just let
off while rioters were hounded in the press and treated with
exceptional severity by courts.
The trade union
movement must now lead the way in ridding us of millionaire
governments and halting austerity measures. They must provide an
alternative to riots, racist division and sowing false hope in New
Labour. Mass trade union action must be initiated - organised,
disciplined and coordinated. But the task is not for the TUC alone.
Many union leaders are slow and hesitant and need the hot breath of
angry workers at their backs. Everyone must be involved.
The NSSN appeals to
-
All trade unionists
to discuss how to galvanise your union for November. Email or phone
your union reps.
-
All students to
discuss how to join forces with the organised working class in
November.
-
The unemployed to
join the fight-back along with the trade unions.
-
All migrant workers
to actively engage with trade unions - don't allow workers to be
divided by racist forces. Let no section of the labour movement be
marginalised. All are part of the common struggle.
